The Science of Baseball

The joy of being a baseball fan is more than just watching a great double play, or a line-drive home run into the right field bleachers.  There's also joy in just understanding more about baseball through the science of the sport - whether its statistics or what really makes a curveball curve, understanding the science of baseball can increase our enjoyment in watching and understanding the game.

Featured Video:  "Out of the Park:  The Physics of Baseball"

This is an excellent video produced by KQED QUEST discussing the physics of baseball including the impact of bat speed, what makes a baseball curve, etc.

Hit Tracker

This link uses a mathmatical calculations to determine how far a homerun was hit.  When a batter hits a long home run, people want to know how far it traveled. Unfortunately, in the past it has been difficult to determine this distance with accuracy when the ball does not complete its trajectory all the way to the ground, i.e. when it strikes a light tower or other tall structure, or even when it lands in outfield seats that are elevated above field level. Hit Tracker determines the true distance a home run travels by recreating the precise trajectory the ball followed during flight, and extending that trajectory all the way back to field level to allow “measurement” of the home run.

The Physics of Baseball

A great resource for all things associated with the Physics of Baseball.

Do Hitters hit a Fast Ball or Curve Ball farther?  (You may be surprised)

Professors from three universities get together to calculate which pitch is theoretically hit farther, with some surprising results.

Why does a Curve Ball Curve?  Who knew that Newton would have figured that out first?

Curve balls curve due to a number of rorces, all originally theorized by Newton - the guy with the apple.
